Yard Sale Bargains

Abigail and I found some good deals at yard sales this morning. I've been wanting a chest freezer for a while, and we found this one for $35!! It's huge! It'll be nice to be able to make bigger batches of bread less often and freeze loaves for later, buy more milk at once and just pop them into the freezer (thus allowing me to make fewer grocery store runs!), cook in bulk and freeze meals for later...and of course ice cream. This baby will hold a lot of ice cream! :)

Joshua really likes John Deere things, and I thought it would be fun to make the boys' room (for now that's just him, of course) in the new house a John Deere room. I was excited to find this for $2!

I also found a few maternity items and some clothes and books for the children. They are all either put away, in the attic pile, or in the laundry...otherwise I'd post a picture of them too.

And I had to include this picture of my poor little Esther. She and Hannah both have fevers and Esther has been throwing up. Sweet baby Hannah just wants to be held constantly, and even then she's not happy a lot of the time. Hopefully this sickness is short-lived!

House Pictures!

Here are some pictures of our new house! Of course it isn't ours yet, but things are rolling along smoothly and we're getting excited about moving! I think I'm going to start packing this week...mainly things that we're not using and won't need between now and August. It was almost dark out when we were at the house taking pictures last night, so they're not that great. But I had to post them anyway. :)

The backyard

The back of the house...the bay window is the eat-in part of the kitchen

The little creek at the rear of the backyard. It empties into a lake just a little farther down.

Why can't we go in???

Trying to get in a different way. :)

Maternity Skirts

I just discovered that Motherhood Maternity has a long skirt!!!! They have it in denim and khaki corduroy. The price is $24.98, which isn't so great when you're used to shopping yard sales and Goodwill, but it's wonderful when you can't find any modest maternity clothes anywhere! They have $5 flat rate shipping, and the items can be returned to a Motherhood store for an exchange or store credit, or they can be shipped back for a full refund (minus shipping costs). I just ordered two. I hope they fit. :)

Changes!!

Some of you already know that our family is about to go through some pretty big changes. Of course we have a baby due in January, but there are two other major things that are about to happen.

Adam is joining the National Guard! He was in the Army for 6+ years before he started working on his biology degree, so he's very familiar with military life (and I am somewhat since he was still active duty when we got married). Of course the National Guard is different...his main duty will be to finish dental school. But the incentives are great and it's just a really good opportunity for us right now. We're excited about it!

Adam's joining the National Guard is also allowing us to move! We found a house that we really like and the seller accepted our offer! Lord willing, if the home inspection and all the little details involved with that go smoothly, we'll be moving in August. We'll be 10-15 minutes from where we are now (still close to our church and the dental school), and our new house will be quite a bit roomier than this one! It has 5 bedrooms plus a big bonus room and lots of extra space to spread out in. :) And it has a garage...we're excited about that! The backyard is nice and big and has a little creek at the back of it. The neighborhood is beautiful and in a good, safe location. I'll feel perfectly comfortable taking the children out for walks, or walking by myself. I was going to post a few pictures, but the realtor took the listing off of the internet, so I can't get any photos from there. I'll have to wait until I'm able to take them myself. We won't close for another 6 weeks or so, so I'll have plenty of time to pack leisurely. We're very excited, and I can't wait to share some pictures!!

I'm off to make some of Nikki's Oatmeal Raisin Cookies to celebrate. These cookies are incredible. I don't normally like oatmeal raisin cookies. I've tried several different recipes and they've just never done much for me, but these are addictive...you should try them! I've known about this recipe for months now, and I've been waiting for an excuse to make them. :)

Ceremony

Adam's class had their White Coat Ceremony last Friday where he received his white lab coat with the school insignia and his name embroidered on it. It basically signals the transition from mostly book learning to mostly patient care, although there will probably always be some of both. I think he looks nice in it, and I'm proud of him. :)

We walked outside to take some pictures and I turned around and saw Joshua playing with this.
I briefly thought that it was a toy snake, and then I realized that it wasn't. Gross! Thankfully it was dead...we think it had been run over and someone had placed it on the ledge behind the bench. It was around 3 feet long...yuk!

Give-Away

My Sister-in-law Tami is giving away a cute book on her blog. Go on over and enter yourself! But hurry...the drawing is tonight!

I've Been Tagged...and Random Pictures

Last week we went to the park with Aunt Amanda and cousin Graeme, but I forgot to post pictures!

Joshua has never been a climber, but he's getting more adventurous!

Hannah found something to eat...surprise, surprise!

Funny little Esther

Graeme likes to go down the slides head-first!

Our little artist in training.

My friend Nikki invited us to go to her neighborhood pool yesterday and the children loved it! Hannah even rode in her baby float for a while!

Speaking of Nikki, she tagged me recently. I'm not very good at this sort of thing, but here it is!

  • Favorite person: Adam, of course! :)
  • Favorite food: Hmmm, at the moment it would have to be fresh fruit (or Home Run ice cream from Brusters). It changes frequently though, since I'm pregnant!
  • Quirks about me: I have one blue eye and one brown eye.
  • How would the person who loves you the most describe you in ten words or less? I asked Adam, and he said "very carefully". :) Then he wrote me a poem and the condensed, ten-word version is "Virtuous Sister, Beloved Wife, Beautiful Woman, Excellent Mama, Priceless Treasure". Isn't he the sweetest? :)
  • Any regrets in life? I regret my shortcomings as a wife and Mama. I wish I could be perfect in those areas, since my failures effect the people that I love the most!
  • What can you NOT live without? Knowing that God is sovereign, all-powerful, merciful, and in complete control of my life.
  • Favorite blog: There are five or six that I check every day, but I guess my favorites are my families' blogs. I love watching my nieces and nephews grow up, even if I only get to see some of them online!
  • Something you can't get enough of: Hugs and kisses from my husband and babies! Well, okay, when I'm pregnant the wet, slobbery kisses are a little hard to stomach, but under normal circumstances I like them. I guess being pregnant is a normal circumstance for me though, huh? :)
  • Worst job you ever had: Working as in intern in a police station. The job was incredibly monotonous and boring (transferring data from paper to computer), but the environment was like living in a soap opera. I think. I've never actually seen a soap opera, but I've heard people talk about them.
  • What job would you pay not to have? A surgeon. I'd pass out for sure.
  • If you could be a fly on the wall anywhere, where would it be? Probably in the dental school so I could watch Adam learn how to fill teeth, make dentures, anesthetize patients, etc.
  • Favorite Bible verse: This changes often depending on the circumstances of life. I find it difficult to pick one Bible verse that is my favorite. Right now, all of Psalm 27 is at the top of my list.
  • Guilty pleasure: Hmmm, I can't think of any. I don't have any secrets that Adam doesn't know about or anything like that.
  • Got any confessions: Nope!
  • If you had $1000 to spend on YOURSELF, what would you spend it on? I would hire someone to make me some nice, modest maternity and non-maternity dresses and skirts. It's SO HARD to find anything decent these days! Adam likes it when I wear dresses, and I prefer to wear dresses, but I think I have one maternity skirt and not a single everyday type of dress. Or maybe I'd spend it on sewing lessons and things to make my own clothes!
  • Favorite thing about your house: Our huge attic. The living space wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable without the attic.
  • Least favorite thing: Roaches. I think they're just a fact of life in the south.
  • One thing you are bad at: Drawing. Just ask my husband. :)
  • If you could change one thing about your current circumstances, what would it be? I wish that I could get the housework done in half the time that it takes me. That way I could spend more time doing things with the children.
  • Who would you like to meet someday? The little twin that I miscarried when I was pregnant with Esther.
  • What makes you feel sexy? Ummm, I think I'll skip this one.
  • Who is your real life hero? "My husband for putting up with me and my moods." (That's quoted straight from Nikki's answers. I completely agree!!)
  • What is the hardest part of your job? Not doing things as well as I think I should. I get frustrated with myself when I'm grumpy with Adam or impatient with the children or something like that.
  • When are you most relaxed? When I'm nursing a baby.
  • What stresses you out? Times when there are things going on that take me away from my family (usually around holidays when there are lots of extra rehearsals, services, etc. to practice and play for).
  • Favorite quote: “There is no worse screen to block out the Spirit than confidence in our own intelligence” - John Calvin
  • Why do you blog? It's fun!! I like reading other blogs, so I'm sure there are some who like to read mine. Also because it's a way to keep family and friends updated on our family. It's also a journal of sorts, and I'm awful at keeping a paper journal. (I should take my Dad's advice and print out my blog posts to keep in a binder. That way I'll still have them if Blogger ever crashes or something.) And because I love showing off my babies. :)
  • Who are you tagging? Amanda, Tami, Joy, Christine, Blessedwith5, and anyone else who wants to participate!
Be sure to let me know when you post your answers so I can read them. :)

Tent!

I built a tent in the living room this morning and the children are having a ball with it! I'm amazed that it's still standing. :) I think I'll have Joshua lay down for a rest in it this afternoon. He'll like reading his books in there.

Goals

3:00pm update: Done! With the exception of the laundry that is going now, and the 2 loads that have to go in after that (it was more like 6 loads!), my list is completed. Things went smoother than I expected, which is nice! Now the girls are sleeping, Joshua is quietly playing with puzzles in his bed, and I'm off to put my feet up and read the math program that we're using. It has several activities to do with preschoolers. I've been doing a couple of them, but I need to get on the ball and do the rest of them!

I woke up feeling kind of sick this morning, but I'm feeling really good right now, so I'm going to take the opportunity to get some housework done! I'd better do it now before I feel like doing nothing but laying on the couch! I thought I'd post my to-do list here as an extra incentive to get things done. I'll come back and update on my progress later.

1. Wash, fold, and put away all laundry, including diapers (4-5 loads)
2. Clean out refrigerator and freeze chicken breasts
3. Deep clean both bathrooms...it's been a while, so I'm afraid they'll need some bleach. :-o
4. Strip and disinfect a certain little girl's bed for the 4th time in a week. Hmmm....I'm thinking no more liquids after 6:00!
5. Tackle the ironing pile

While I'm working, the children are going to watch this DVD that I got from the library. They've never seen it before, but I think they'll like it. I'm hoping to get both bathrooms done in that time.

Pleased

A while back I posted about how happy I was with The Picture People and the great job that they did with Hannah. Well, they've done it again!

This was what we gave our mothers for Mother's Day! The photographer wasn't quite as good this time, but I'm very pleased with the outcome! Except for the fact that Esther was pouting and wouldn't smile. I guess there's not much that can be done about that...except for what I did when we got home. Hopefully it won't happen again! I really do recommend The Picture People though. They usually have good coupons that you can print off of their website, and their prices are very reasonable.

Recipes

One of my new goals is to spend less time in the kitchen. It sounds kind of funny, but I honestly feel like I spend most of the day there. By the time one meal is served and cleaned up it's time to start on the next one! I like to cook, and I don't mind being in the kitchen, but I think that the time would be better spent reading to the children or taking them to the park or doing anything with them. I like to include them in my cooking, but it's a little hard to get everybody involved without having at least one major disaster or injury. So, I've decided to make better use of my slow cooker. The problem is that I'm having a hard time finding healthy recipes. I don't want to just dump some cream soups and other processed foods into the crock pot every day. I don't mind those sorts of meals very occasionally, but I like to serve my family healthier meals as often as I can. I'm on a quest to find some good, healthy slow cooker meals. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I would love any recipes or cookbook recommendations!

Back to Back

We don't normally plan back to back vacations, but we did this past week! We had a wonderful time at the beach with my family (as you've seen from the plethora of photos that I've posted!). We got home Tuesday evening and left Thursday morning for a few days in the mountains with two other families. We went with my friend Nikki and her family and my friend Lyra and her family. All in all there were six adults and nine children under the age of 5! We had so much fun! The children all played together wonderfully, despite missing their naps a couple of times. We stayed in an incredibly nice 5 bedroom, 3 story cabin in the Georgia mountains. We had to drive quite a ways to get there, but it was well worth it! The price was great and the view from the cabin was beautiful. We're going to have to make this a yearly occurrence!

The view from the back deck.

It was every bit as nice as it looks!

One More

I love this picture of Hannah eating sand. :) Every time I turned around she was stuffing another handful into her mouth. She tried coral too. That was pretty easy to keep away from her, but it's kind of hard to keep her away from the sand when you're at the beach!
