Cute Pictures

We went to a nearby strawberry farm a few weeks ago. Strawberry picking is over now, but they have some other produce, and they also sell zinnias and a few other types of flowers. You cut them yourself and pay $2 for as may as you can fit in your hand. I have big hands, so it's a great deal for me! The girls really enjoyed it. Joshua wasn't too excited about smelling the flowers, but he had fun running around and acting like a boy. :)

Noah is never bored! He always has someone in his face or giving him a toy or trying to kiss him or something. He usually loves the attention, but it can get overwhelming at times, and when he gets overloaded he likes to play in his bed by himself. He'll often play for an hour or two and be perfectly content! He also loves to be read to. I got this picture of Esther "reading" him a stack of books the other day.

The Zoo

We went to the zoo a few weeks ago with some friends. There was one other adult and three middle school-aged girls who were so helpful with the children! They got passed from one set of arms to another the whole time, and I didn't have to be concerned with losing anyone. :)

I know it looks like Joshua was about to fall in the water with the alligator, but he really wasn't!

I took this picture for Adam. This funny guy needs a dentist!

I thought it would be a struggle to get Hannah to keep her hat on, but she wouldn't take it off!

There are a few questions that we get asked over and over when we are out. It happens even more frequently when I am out by myself with all of the children. One of those questions is, "Are they always this quiet?" (That ranks right up there with "Are they all yours?" and "Don't you know what causes that?", which is not the least bit funny to me, even though people say it to be cute.) I usually try to just smile nicely and say something along the lines of "Children are a blessing, and yes, we do actually want this many and are praying for more."

Anyway, I thought I'd post this video so that you can see just how quiet my children are. :)

I don't know if you could tell, but they are yelling "energy" while they are running around screaming! :) I'm not sure if they're releasing it or just informing me that they have it, but I think it's funny.

Here are a few of the shots from Noah's visit to The Picture People (for free pictures!) last weekend. We didn't get all of these for free. I was allowed to choose one pose, and I picked the first one.

I've tried a couple of new recipes recently that I thought were worth sharing. I have a little container garden out on the deck, and I used some fresh basil from that to make Simple Garlic and Basil Pesto.

I used the pesto to make this Baked Pesto Chicken recipe, which turned out to be really tasty! I've used the pesto with pasta as well, and it is very good.

I also made several new recipes from this cookbook (my current favorite!) last week.

Stuffed Chicken Breasts
6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
8 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
3 cups chopped fresh spinach leaves
1/3 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained and chopped
1 tsp minced lemon peel
1 tsp dried basil, oregano or mint (I used fresh basil)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Black pepper to taste
1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
1/2 cup oil-cured olives
Hot cooked polenta

Place chicken breast between 2 pieces of plastic wrap. Using the tenderizer mallet or back of skillet, pound breast until about 1/4 inch thick (I used a skillet, and it was fun!). Repeat with remaining chicken. Combine feta, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, lemon peel, basil, garlic powder and pepper in medium bowl. Lay pounded chicken, smooth side down, on work surface. Place approximately 2 tbsp feta mixture on wide end of breast. Roll tightly. Repeat with remaining chicken. Place rolled chicken, seam side down, in slow cooker. Top with diced tomatoes with juice and olives. Cover; cook on low 5 1/2 to 6 hours or on high 4 hours. Serve with polenta.
This recipe was great, though next time I will leave off the olives (they tasted awful!), use more filling, and skip the polenta. The polenta wasn't that good, it was expensive, and it was a pain to make. Next time I'll stick with rice or couscous.

Sweet and Sour Shrimp with Pineapple
3 cans (8oz each) pineapple chunks, drained and 1 cup juice reserved
2 packages (6oz each) frozen snow peas, thawed (I used fresh)
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/3 cup sugar, plus 2 tsp
2 chicken bouillon cubes
2 cups boiling water
4 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp ground ginger
1 lb shrimp, peeled, deveined and cleaned
1/4 cup cider vinegar
Hot cooked rice

Drain pineapple chunks, reserving 1 cup juice. Place pineapple and snow peas in slow cooker. Combine cornstarch and sugar in medium saucepan. Dissolve bouillon cubes in water and add to saucepan. Mix in 1 cup reserved pineapple juice, soy sauce and ginger. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Pour into slow cooker. Cover; cook on low 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours. Add shrimp and vinegar. Cover; cook on low 30 minutes or until shrimp are done. Serve over hot rice.

Free Pictures!

I recently got an email from The Picture People with a great offer. If you go here and print out the coupon, you can get an 8x10, two 5x7's, and eight wallets all for free! We have had really good experiences with The Picture People in the past, including our most recent family session. They don't charge a sitting fee and you can take your own props in if you want to. We really don't need any more pictures right now, but I can't resist free, so I made an appointment to have 6 month pictures of Noah taken. :)

Hannah Funnies

Hannah is not quite two, but she talks like she's three or four. Probably because she listens to her older siblings talk all day long. :) I don't think it's just that though. I think she's a pretty smart cookie, but I guess I would since she's my baby and I'm a little biased! Seriously though, she often surprises me with the things that she comprehends and communicates.

The other day right before bedtime I walked into the room to find Hannah just standing there with her pajama shirt lifted up, staring at her belly button. I asked her what she was looking at and she said, "Belly button. It's so exciting!" :)

We recently read Proverbs 30 during our family worship time. Verse 17 says, "The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures." It apparently made a pretty big impact. Yesterday morning Hannah was playing with a baby doll and I told her that she needed to put it down so that I could take her to the restroom. I had barely gotten the words out of my mouth when she slapped the poor baby onto a chair and said, "I obey Mama. The birds not eat my eyeballs out!"

All of the children love to help me around the house. They will run things up and down the stairs as many times as I ask them to, and they think it's the greatest thing in the world! They're always asking if they can help me do something, and I'm enjoying it. :) Hannah was helping me wash the windows in the kitchen the other day. I didn't want her using window cleaner because I was afraid she'd breathe it and get it in her mouth. I told her that she could just wipe it with the towel that she was playing with, but she decided that it needed a little spit too. :)

Just Because He's So Cute...

Noah and I had fun playing around with the camera when he woke up early from his nap one day last week.

He's got such a fun personality and he has the sweetest little giggle.

He was born with black hair, but now it is blonde and it sticks straight up!

These pictures would be cuter without the drool, but it's just an unavoidable part of life right now! Noah has four teeth on the bottom and still no sign of any on the top.

Sweet little baby feet. :)

Noah is happiest when Mama is holding him!

The little stinker scared me to death the other day. I put him in his swing upstairs and left him for just a couple of minutes to get dinner out of the refrigerator. When I went back up he had somehow managed to flip himself out of the swing and he was dangling by one foot with his head about an inch above the floor. He wasn't moving or crying, and I'm pretty sure my heart stopped. He was fine though. He was just sucking away on his pacifier and looking at the world upside down!

My good blogging friend Christine posted this video the other day and I had to post it here too. I can't stop laughing at it! Chick-fil-A is one of my favorite places to eat, though I have to say that I really like the fact that they're closed on Sunday. :)

I don't often get to see what Adam does while he's away at dental school during the day, so I was excited to find this picture. One of Adam's classmates posted it on Facebook and I snagged it from there. You may think this is a little gross (I do!), but it's neat anyway! He's doing oral surgery on a pig jaw. :) I'm officially one of Adam's patients now, so I'll get to see him in action more often!

4th of July!

We had a fun afternoon and evening at church on the 4th of July! It doesn't get much better than patriotic music complete with brass and percussion, good food, great friends, a bluegrass band in the courtyard and twirly dresses! Special thanks to Grandma E. for making the girls' dresses! They couldn't wait to put them on, and they loved them!

Noah Eats Avocado!

Noah had his first taste of food yesterday! I started him on brown rice cereal a few days ago, but yesterday I gave him avocado. He made the most hilarious faces while he was eating it, but he wanted more and ate all that I had made for him!

He takes after his big brother and sisters (and especially his littlest big sister, who eats almost anything she can get her hands on) in that he enjoys his food!
