Soup and Cookies

I haven't blogged in a little over a week because, well, I just haven't felt like it!  My dad was here over Thanksgiving and we had a great time with him!  Unfortunately, I neglected to take many pictures and the ones that I did take did not come out very well.

I made a new soup recipe yesterday that turned out to be really good.  I'm not a big fan of dumping a bunch of canned goods into a pot and calling it dinner, but this recipe was fast and it used up the leftover turkey from Thanksgiving.  I definitely recommend it!  By the way, I doubled it because I double almost everything these days, and it made a ton of soup.  It is probably enough for 3 or 4 dinners for our family, and we eat a lot.

My friend, Emily, has gotten me hooked on freezing balls of cookie dough.  I love it because I can make a batch of cookies and only bake the amount that we should be limiting ourselves to.  If I bake the whole batch, then we end up eating more than we should.  The cookies really turn out better when baked from frozen balls than they do fresh.  They are nice and big and puffy with a crunchy outside and a chewy inside.  Yum!  This is my favorite recipe to make.

Halfway There!

I am 20 weeks today!  I'm feeling great and am eating more, although my appetite is nothing like it usually is at this point.  That puzzles me a little bit.  I usually eat three good meals a day and sometimes have a small snack in between, but I have to be careful not to overeat even just a little bit because it makes me feel awful.  My weight gain is up to 5 pounds and I expect to gain a few more on Thursday. :)  I have been feeling the baby move for about 4 weeks now.  That never gets old!

My doctor's office must be closed this week because I have to wait until the very end of next week to have my ultrasound and find out the baby's gender.  I'm guessing it's a girl.  We'll see!

Too Much Fun

I never did my 3 in 30 update last Friday.  We were having way too much fun enjoying the beautiful fall weather to think about blogging. :)  Here is an update on our goals as well as some pictures.

1.  Work on my girls' dresses.  I got another half of a row smocked.  Not stellar, but at least it's something.

2.  Get most if not all of our Christmas gifts bought and mailed (or wrapped and ready to hand out) by the last week of November.  I made a lot of progress on this goal!  We all went out shopping together on Saturday and knocked out almost all of our list.  I need to buy a few more things at the store and order a few more things online and that will be it.  I had originally thought that I would only get the Christmas shopping for our extended family done this month, but I have been able to pick up a lot of bargains for Adam and the children in the process.  I found some cute skirts and dresses at Goodwill for the girls that will make great Christmas gifts.

3.  Sit down and do piano with my three oldest children at least three days a week. We did it!  I sat down with them three days and they each practiced on their own one day.

Here are my childrens' goals.

Joshua (8)
Target practice with his bow and arrow for 15 minutes three days a week.  Joshua practiced shooting his bow and arrow twice last week, but each time was for a good bit longer than 15 minutes.  Maybe I should adjust his goal accordingly.

Abigail (7)
Learn how to make at least 4 different recipes independently.  I did not get around to having Abigail make anything new, but she did make a couple of easy things that she has made before.  She will get to make at least one of our Thanksgiving dishes this week.

Esther (6)
Read Black Beauty.  Esther is finished with her book and has been coloring some Thanksgiving placemats during her reading time.

Watching for deer from the warmth of the family room. :)  Adam was ready to go out on the deck and fire if needed!

Girls keeping watch.

Boys firing away.

Throwing leaves at each other!

Peter wasn't so sure about the leaves.  I think they didn't taste quite as good as he was thinking they might. :)

I hope to get more done on these goals this week, but I do not plan to post an update on the blog on Friday.  We always get our Christmas tree and decorate the house the day after Thanksgiving, and my Dad will be here with us.  Blogging is going to be nowhere near the top of my to-do list!

The Mountain

Adam had a dental meeting in the big city last weekend and I took the children to Stone Mountain on Saturday.  We didn't do any of the extra expensive things.  We just paid our $10 to get in the gate and then enjoyed a picnic and nature.  The childrens' favorite part was climbing up the mountain.  We made it about 1/4 of the way up and then Mama decided that we needed to turn around.  :)  One on the back and one in the belly is not the easiest way to climb a mountain!  I was afraid that Noah and Joseph would get tired out and cranky quickly, but they loved it!  They probably would have climbed to the top if I had let them.  Maybe we'll go back and make it all the way up one day.

Walking buddies. :)

He kept telling me, "I don't need a hand!"

3 in 30

Here is a review of my goals for November.

1.  Work on my girls' dresses.  I got the front of Abigail's dress cut out and pleated and I have started on the smocking.  I decided to start with Abigail's just in case I don't have time to get all of them finished.  At least the other girls can wear her dress later!  I love the colors so far...sky blue fabric and white smocking with yellow flowers.  I should have thought to even out the pleats before I took the picture, but I didn't and it makes the smocking look uneven.  When I get it finished and take out the gathering threads it won't look like that anymore.

2.  Get most if not all of our Christmas gifts bought and mailed (or wrapped and ready to hand out) by the last week of November.  I did a lot of thinking and planning this week, added a few more things to my Amazon shopping cart, and purchased a few things.  We usually do gift cards for our extended family because shipping is so terribly expensive and because everyone likes gift cards anyway!  We may be seeing some of our extended family this year though, so I am considering some other options since shipping will not be an issue.

3.  Sit down and do piano with my three oldest children at least three days a week.  I failed miserably on this one.  We didn't do piano at all this past week.  I had planned to be off of our schedule for several reasons, so maybe I can blame it on that?  :)  Or maybe I was just lazy.  We did get a good bit of school done this week, but there were a log of things that did not get accomplished.  Our cleaning was done as-needed instead of on schedule, we skipped our read-aloud time every day, we did no piano, etc.  But we had fun with company on Monday, got some errands done on Tuesday, and had a great time with some out of town friends yesterday!  Adam has Monday off, and I'm not sure what our plans are for that day, but we will definitely get back to our schedule starting on Tuesday of next week.

Here are my childrens' goals.

Joshua (8)
Target practice with his bow and arrow for 15 minutes three days a week.  Joshua only used his bow and arrow once this week, but he spent nearly 45 minutes practicing with it.  He really likes this goal!

Abigail (7)
Learn how to make at least 4 different recipes independently.  Abigail made the refried beans this morning for our dinner tonight.  I cut the onion for her and she needed a little help using the garlic press, but other than that she did it all herself.  The house smells wonderful!

Esther (6)
Read Black Beauty.  Done!  Esther decided to kick it into high gear and she finished her book at the end of last week!  We should probably come up with another goal for her, but with Thanksgiving coming up I think I'm just going to let her help me in the kitchen and do some fall crafts (nothing too involved...coloring and things that she can do on her own).

Fun With Friends

We were excited to have friends come visit us last week!  Cherie and her five sweet children came and spent a few days with us.  We went to a couple of museums, visited a farm with miniature animals, and just had a wonderful time visiting and playing together.  Twelve children under the age of 10 was quite an adventure. :)  We had a 9yo, 8yo, 7yo, two 6yo's, 5yo, 4yo, 3yo, two 2yo's, a 10 month-old, and a 6 month-old.  There were two Joshua's and two Hannah's. :)  The children all did great and they had lots of fun playing together.  I really enjoyed visiting with Cherie and sharing tips and whatnot!

The two Joshua's reading by the fire before bed.

Esther is our animal lover.  She isn't the least bit afraid of them!  She is holding a 10 day-old miniature Nubian goat here.

Nathaniel and Joseph were buddies. :)  These two little guys were born on the same day, in the same hospital, and Cherie and I had the same doctor!

Great Deal!

My friend, Sharon, alerted me to a really great deal at Lands' End!  This cape is regularly $79.50 but is on sale for $9.99.  If you use the coupon code LOVEWINTER1 with PIN 1012 you can get it for $7.48 with free shipping!!  I just ordered one for each of my girls for Christmas.  The code is good through November 13, but I would be surprised if the capes are available for long.

3 in 30

I know I'm a day late again, but we were having too much fun with friends this past week to even think about blogging!  We have settled on our goals for November.  Here are mine.

1.  Work on my girls' dresses.  I'm keeping this goal from last month because if I'm going to get them done then I really need to get moving on them.  Easter seems so far away, but my sewing time is very limited and I'm not very fast.  I know that I'll get more done on them if I make this one of my monthly goals again.  Who wants to do an update every week and say that they got nothing accomplished?  Hopefully by next Friday I will have something to share that is picture worthy.

2.  Get most if not all of our Christmas gifts bought and mailed (or wrapped and ready to hand out) by the last week of November.  December always turns out to be a very busy (and rather expensive!) month, so I thought I'd go ahead and get this done in November.  I already have some ideas, but we have not purchased any gifts yet.

3.  Sit down and do piano with my three oldest children at least three days a week.  This is something that is in my schedule, but I have not done a very good job of being consistent with it.  Something else always spills over into those time slots and before I know it they are gone and it is time to move on to something else.  I need to be more disciplined and make sure that we do piano together.  I'm going to shoot to sit down with them 3 days a week and have them practice on their own the other two.  They love playing the piano and they are ready to really get moving.  I just have to get myself moving!

Here are my childrens' goals.

Joshua (8)
Target practice with his bow and arrow for 15 minutes three days a week.  Joshua likes using his bow and arrow, but we often forget that he has it and he spends his outside time with the animals or just exploring.  Those things are great too, but he wants to get better at hitting his target, so he will be practicing this month.

Abigail (7)
Learn how to make at least 4 different recipes independently.  We decided to keep Abigail's goal the same this month.  She loves learning to cook and it is helpful to me, so we're going to keep working on it.

Esther (6)
Read Black Beauty.  This is Esther's October/November goal and she is well over halfway through the book.  She is really enjoying it, and already has her next book picked out and waiting for her. :)
